Multi-threaded NewsWatcher
==========================
by
Simon Fraser
based on the NewsWatcher code, by John Norstad
What is it?
-----------
Multi-threaded NewsWatcher (or MT-NewsWatcher for short) is a Usenet News
reader for the Macintosh, for users with direct TCP/IP Internet connections
(including SLIP & PPP users).
MT-NewsWatcher addes to NewsWatcher some of those features that
Nuntius users have had for a long while, most notably multi-threading.
In this context, multi-threading refers to the ability of the application
to perform several concurrent tasks (e.g. download articles from several
groups simultaneously).
Documentation
-------------
MT-NewsWatcher still maintains many of the features of the original
NewsWatcher by John Norstad, and his documentation is a "must read"
for all users. You can get it from:
ftp://ftp.acns.nwu.edu/pub/newswatcher/
as either a Microsoft Word document, or a self-viewing Postcard file.
The new and improved features in MT-NewsWatcher are described in
its documentation, which is available on the web at
http://www.best.com/~smfr/mtnw/
System Requirements
-------------------
MT-NewsWatcher requires a Macintosh with a 68020 or better, or PowerPC
processor, running System 7.1 or later with the Thread Manager and the
Drag Manager installed. System 7.5.5 or later is preferred, and it runs
fine under Mac OS 8. You will need 2.5 megabytes or more of free memory
(depending mainly on the number of groups carried by your news server)
and a hard drive. The Mac must be connected to the Internet, and MacTCP
or Open Transport must be properly installed and configured.
This version of MT-NewsWatcher is distributed as a fat binary, so will
run well on both 68k and PPC machines.
Read the online documentation for information about use Speech Recognition
and the Words Services suite with MT-NewsWatcher.
Distribution
------------
Multi-threaded NewsWatcher is free. It may not be sold for profit
or included with other software, products, publications, or services
which are sold for profit without the permission of Simon Fraser, but
otherwise you should feel free to use it and redistribute it.
Multi-threaded NewsWatcher may not be included on CD-ROMs without
the express permission of Simon Fraser. Permission will usually be
granted on the condition that I get a copy of the CD-ROM.
Bug reports &c
--------------
Before sending me email about a problem, or with a feature request,
please read the documenation pointed to above. I do not take kindly
to receiving questions which are plainly answered in the documentation.
Please report all bugs to Simon Fraser, <mailto:smfr@best.com>,
and include details of your machine configuration, system version,
networking software, and a detailed description of what you do to
trigger the bug. If the bug is causes a crash, and is repeatable, it
is of great help to have a MacsBug log. Information about how to obtain
one is available at <http://www.best.com/~smfr/macsbug.html>.
Updates
-------
Information about updates and patches will always be posted to
<news:comp.sys.mac.comm>, and you can check on the status of the
current release on <http://www.best.com/~smfr/mtnw/download.html>.
